About
Captain Barangay
… is the brainchild of a group of third year law students who were at a loss as to how to call their class project. He is a product of too much bantering, TV-watching (yes, think Captain Barbell and Captain Planet), blogging, photo editing, video editing, working and boozing. (We’re joking about the last part. :D)
Parts of the site are written in a no-nonsense matter fit for the serious topic that we are tackling. The blog, however, is written by Captain Barangay himself (or his ghost writer BaranGurl awi, when he’s too busy saving the women and children from their pesky offenders), so pardon him when he’s excited about the posters and pictures of him that his BaranGuys and BaranGurls are releasing.
The BaranGuys and BaranGurls
… are third year students of the UP College of Law and are currently enrolled in a course on Local Government under Atty. Rowena V. Guanzon. Our professor is a passionate advocate of children’s and women’s rights. With her insightful discourse on the topic, she made us aware that knowledge constrained in the four walls of the classroom would be limiting. The law would better serve its purpose if the public is informed about it, so our class was divided into groups to help disseminate the word and spirit of the law to local communities.
On 20 February 2009, we would be conducting a seminar for the barangay captains of the City of Makati to bring them up to date on the Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children Act of 2004 (Republic Act No. 9262), focusing on the importance of the Barangay Protection Order. This site would serve as a repository of our materials, as well as a place to discuss better ways to protect our women and children.
